| The MOSS
family have operated a holiday caravan park in Lancashire
for over 50 years. It was started after the Second World
War by JOHN AND ALLISON MOSS. Their three children all
work for the business which is run as a limited company.
Three grandchildren are also working there full-time,
another two do so when they are on holiday from college.
The business is large, the site had over 500 permanent
caravans and also a holiday club, supermarket and sports
facility. Allison died some three years ago and the
Inland Revenue are trying to collect over £1m
in inheritance tax. If they succeed the business will
have to be sold and the three families could find themselves
in dire straits.
Fortunately the site has been well
managed and Allison’s daughter who is the accountant
is able to assist advisers in assembling a strong case
to fight the Revenue. They won a case before the Special
Commissioners and have now succeeded in having that
judgement upheld in the Court of Appeal. Careful attention
to detail has paid off.
