As the
name shows the Court of Protection is a division of
the High Court which is there to look after peoples'
estates when they are unable to do so themselves. Often
the large awards of damages for accident victims are
paid into the Court of Protection so that it can supervise
what is done for the person concerned – called, respectfully,
“The Patient”.
I can guide relatives through the labyrinth
of rules of the Court and arrange for the appointment
of the Receiver. Elderly people who have not executed
powers of attorney are usually patients of the Court
because they may have no one who has access to their
money to pay their bills. The guiding rule here should
be not to wait too long before acting. |
